2010/2011 End of Season Report

Last season produced mixed fortunes for all our squash teams. This was one of a very few seasons when none of our teams won any glory but did end the season with some excitement.

The ladies team (captained by Liz Young & Julie Hicks) started the season as favourites to win their league for the 3rd year in a row but finished by surviving relegation from division 1. This was because we had players missing for a number of reasons such as pregnancy, ankle sprain, back problems etc and we were unable to turn out a consistence side. However all the ladies managed to pull together for the last few matches to ensure we had enough points to stay up in division 1.

In the Warwickshire Men’s League we had 3 teams competing. The 3rds (captained by Oliver Hoare) started the season hoping to repeat the previous season’s success by winning promotion again, this time to 3rd division. But due to inconsistent performances they just managed to hold on to their place in division 4 by a single point. The 2nd team (captained by Alf Kavanagh) had a pretty good season and finished 3rd in div.2 thereby just missing out on promotion. The 1st team (captained by Brett green) were always in the running for the league title and would have won it had it not been for couple of bad results due to players being unavailable for various reasons. Hence they have to settle for 2nd place in the premier division.

In the Midland Premier league the C&NW team (captained by Danny O’Hara) fared very well and finished runners up. There were some excellent performances from all the players but they were not enough to overcome the team that mainly consists of full time squash players.

The racketball team also had an exciting season at the bottom end of division 2 of the Warwickshire league but with some clever leadership from Alf Kavanagh the team not only managed to avoid relegation but finished mid-table.

Our club also had a team, consisting of 4 boys & 1 girl, playing in the under 15 Warwickshire Junior League. The team, managed by Ben Palmer, has won 2 matches, narrowly lost 3 with 2 matches to play is holding its own about mid table in their respective division. All results are available for viewing on the Warwickshire squash website.

So an exciting season for all our teams. Bearing in mind that certain clubs are prepared to pay out considerable sums of money for professional players to play for their teams, we can hold our own against all of them and do it without having to pay professionals. Not bad.
